The Cycle of Healing

Watching my own skin heal is one of my favorite phenomena in the world. It's a slow process; it requires patience, and care, and trust. Every day, I get to see my own constituent parts at work, first isolating, then covering and preparing the area, then slowly knitting together the severed skin. Of course, healing does not stop once the scar is formed, either. Depending on the physiology of the location of the scar and how the scar was made, they can be stable for years, or they can fade to smooth, hairless patches otherwise no different from the rest of the skin in months.

The result is beautiful, too. I love the way well-tended scars look and feel, and as cliché as it is, scars are a record of events that I carry with me, always, on my body. For someone with a memory as bad as mine, it's a great comfort.
